Calculation steps

Work through one step at a time or reveal the complete calculation. The steps use your current inputs.

    How to calculate

Convert each unsigned magnitude to decimal degrees, apply the selected hemisphere and format the components with carrying.

decimal degrees=degrees+minutes/60+seconds/3600; south and west have negative signs

    Worked example

    40.7128° N, 74.006° W is signed 40.7128, −74.006, or DMS 40°42′46.08″ N and 74°0′21.6″ W.

    Assumptions and input details

Direction comes from the selected hemisphere, so enter nonnegative magnitude components without embedded N/S/E/W or signs. Latitude is at most 90° and longitude at most 180°. DMS display rounds to 0.001 arcsecond with carry. This reformats coordinates without map lookup, datum transformation or a claim of navigation accuracy.

    Using this calculator

Can I enter my own problem?

Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.

    Are the results exact?

Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.

    Is my input uploaded?

The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
