Calculation steps
Work through one step at a time or reveal the complete calculation. The steps use your current inputs.
How to calculate
Cap each nominal exponential delay, then apply symmetric fractional bounds and cap again. Add fixed attempt durations to form nominal, earliest and latest possible timelines.
Retry k nominal wait=min(cap,base×factor^(k−1)); bounds=[wait×(1−j),min(cap,wait×(1+j))]
Worked example
Base 1 s, multiplier 2, cap 5 s and four retries give waits 1,2,4,5 s. Five attempts at 0.2 s each finish nominally at 13 s after the initial start.
Assumptions and input details
All attempts are assumed to occur and last the same entered duration; no success probabilities, service policy, network traffic or generated jitter samples. Delay bounds are independently attainable scenario bounds, not confidence intervals. Cap applies after jitter as well. Retries 0–1000; long tables disclose omissions.
Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
Add or subtract up to 100 durations. Use signed clock durations or decimal hours, minutes or seconds, then compare the exact total and running sums.
Calculate earliest and latest task times, total slack and critical tasks in a dependency network.
Intersect same-day participant availability and list grid-aligned start times that fit your meeting duration.
