Calculation steps
Work through one step at a time or reveal the complete calculation. The steps use your current inputs.
How to calculate
Multiply the three sequential retention fractions, divide the target stand by their product and round upward. Add your allowance, round again, then purchase whole packets.
Minimum seeds=ceil(target/(usable×germination×establishment)); planned=ceil(minimum×(1+allowance))
Worked example
Target 81 plants, usable fraction 100%, germination 90% and post-germination establishment 90% give a modeled minimum of 100 seeds. At 10% extra allowance, plan 110 seeds; packets of 50 require three packets.
Assumptions and input details
Fractions refer to counted seeds and successive stages, not mass-based purity or a guaranteed final stand. Enter rates appropriate to your own seed lot and conditions; no species catalogue or planting recommendation. Allowance is applied after rounding the modeled minimum. All planned/purchased quantities are whole counts; packet leftovers are shown separately.

Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
