How to calculate
Use the rectilinear central-projection model. Each half-angle is atan(half the sensor dimension divided by focal length). Scale the sensor dimensions by distance divided by focal length for scene coverage.
Angle=2atan(sensor dimension/(2f)); coverage=distance×sensor dimension/f
Worked example
A 36×24 mm sensor with 50 mm focal length at a 10 m distance covers a 7.2×4.8 m plane, with horizontal field angle about 39.598°.
Assumptions and input details
Positive dimensions only; sensor dimensions up to 1 m, focal length up to 1000 m and distance up to 1e12 m. Use actual active sensor dimensions, not a marketing format name or 35 mm equivalent focal length. The subject plane is perpendicular to the optical axis. This is a rectilinear pinhole/distant-focus approximation with distance measured from the projection centre. Finite-conjugate focus shifts, lens distortion, fisheye mapping, focus breathing, stabilization crops and depth of field are not modeled.

Unit definitions
Unit selection is independent of language. Each selector contains only units for its physical quantity. Calculations use defined base units internally.
Choose from 23 length definitions, including explicitly labelled regional measures. Area conversions square the length factor; geometric volumes cube it.
Regional measures are not interchangeable merely because their names look similar. This is a documented selection, not a claim to include every historical unit.

Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
