How to calculate
Allocate cost less salvage across full-year periods. For double declining, charge the larger of declining-balance and remaining-life straight-line amounts while respecting salvage.
SL=(cost−salvage)/life; DB=opening value×2/life, switching to remaining-life SL when larger
Worked example
Cost 10000, salvage 1000 and life 5 years give straight-line charges of 1800 per year and closing book value 1000.
Assumptions and input details
Generic book allocation, not a tax depreciation calculation or jurisdictional accounting compliance claim. Life 1–100 whole years; cost and salvage nonnegative, salvage no greater than cost. All years are full periods. No bonus deductions, local asset classes, partial-year convention, impairment, disposal or tax effects. Double declining explicitly switches to remaining-life straight line when larger; salvage limits every charge. Book value is not market value.

Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
