How to calculate
Separate the net upfront replacement outlay from recurring annual energy and maintenance costs. Build both cumulative cost paths, show their crossing when one exists and compare totals over the selected horizon.
Net outlay=purchase+installation+disposal−sale proceeds; annual cost=annual kWh×unit price+maintenance
Worked example
With annual old/new use 500/200 kWh, price 0.25, annual maintenance 60/20 and net outlay 720, annual saving is 115. Simple recovery is 6.26087 years. Ten-year costs are 1850 keeping old versus 1420 replacing.
Assumptions and input details
Constant entered prices, energy use and maintenance; no inflation, discounting, financing, depreciation, future replacement, reliability or residual value at the horizon. Old purchase cost is sunk and excluded. Recovery is a simple outlay calculation, not an instruction to buy. Nonpositive annual savings may prevent recovery. Net sale credit can exceed upfront costs; cumulative paths and crossing are reported separately so an initial credit is not mistaken for lasting savings.

Unit definitions
Unit selection is independent of language. Each selector contains only units for its physical quantity. Calculations use defined base units internally.
Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
Estimate energy and cost for an appliance from active and standby power, daily schedule and duty cycle. Enter your own price per kilowatt-hour and fixed period charge.
Discount signed cash flows at their entered times and sum their present values. Keep initial outlays, future inflows and the undiscounted total visible.
Compare sales revenue with fixed and variable costs. Find the break-even quantity, the first whole-unit quantity without a loss and profit at your chosen sales volume.
