How to calculate
Normalize numerator energy to joules and denominator volume to cubic meters.
Energy density in J/m³=value×joules per energy unit/cubic meters per volume unit
Worked example
1 Wh/L is 3.6 MJ/m³ and 1 kWh/m³. One Btu(IT)/ft³ is about 37258.9458 J/m³.
Assumptions and input details
Use the same stated volume and energy basis throughout. For gases, a unit conversion does not change temperature, pressure or standard-versus-actual volume conditions. For stored energy, nominal versus usable energy must already be defined. Mass-based energy density requires an additional material density and is a separate quantity.

Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
