Calculation steps

How to calculate
Add seam allowances to the finished rectangle and divide by retained dimensions after shrinkage. Fit identical pieces across the usable unwashed bolt width and round rows upward. Add total end trim.
Cut width=(finished width+2 seam)/(1−width shrinkage); rows=ceil(count/floor(usable bolt width/cut width)); length=rows×cut length+trim
Worked example
Six 40×50 cm pieces with 1 cm seams need 42×52 cm before shrink adjustment. On 136 cm usable width, three fit across. At 5% length shrinkage and 10 cm end trim, buy about 1.19474 m.
Assumptions and input details
Rectangular repeated-piece estimate, not arbitrary nesting or a garment pattern. All pieces keep one orientation; optional rotation compares two uniform layouts. Grain, nap and directional print must permit rotation. Shrinkage is entered separately across and along the bolt; seam allowances describe the post-shrink sewn pieces. No print matching or retail purchase increment is added.
Unit definitions
Unit selection is independent of language. Each selector contains only units for its physical quantity. Calculations use defined base units internally.
Choose from 23 length definitions, including explicitly labelled regional measures. Area conversions square the length factor; geometric volumes cube it.
Regional measures are not interchangeable merely because their names look similar. This is a documented selection, not a claim to include every historical unit.

Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
