How to calculate
Measure the stitch and row density of a blocked swatch. Subtract total edge stitches from the ideal count, round the pattern repeats, add the edges back, then calculate the actual resulting dimensions.
Ideal stitches=target width×swatch stitches/swatch width; total=rounded repeats×repeat+edges; rows=round(target height×swatch rows/swatch height)
Worked example
A 20-stitch, 30-row swatch over 10×10 cm needs ideally 100 stitches and 180 rows for 50×60 cm. With 4-stitch repeats and 2 total edges, nearest rounding gives 102 stitches and 51 cm width.
Assumptions and input details
Use an interior measured swatch in the intended stitch pattern after its normal washing/blocking. Ties round upward. Rows round to the nearest whole row. Edge stitches are part of total width and use the same density estimate. This sizes a flat rectangle; garment shaping, yarn quantity, stretch and seams are not inferred. Counts that round to zero are rejected.

Unit definitions
Unit selection is independent of language. Each selector contains only units for its physical quantity. Calculations use defined base units internally.
Choose from 23 length definitions, including explicitly labelled regional measures. Area conversions square the length factor; geometric volumes cube it.
Regional measures are not interchangeable merely because their names look similar. This is a documented selection, not a claim to include every historical unit.

Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
