Calculation steps
Work through one step at a time or reveal the complete calculation. The steps use your current inputs.
How to calculate
Treat the exam as the only remaining component and rearrange the final weighted-average equation.
Exam%= [target−current×completed fraction]/(1−completed fraction); marks=ceil(exam%×maximum marks/100)
Worked example
An 85% coursework average carrying 60% of the course needs 97.5% on the remaining 40% exam to reach 90% overall. On a 100-mark exam, 98 whole marks are needed.
Assumptions and input details
The completed weight is below100%; the exam covers all remaining weight. Inputs use the same percentage scale and linear weighting, without grade curves, drop rules, extra credit or special pass requirements. A target requiring above100% is reported as unattainable under the entered model. A requirement below zero means zero exam marks mathematically suffice for that target.
Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
Calculate cumulative grade-point average and future grade points needed for an entered target.
Enter paired values and weights to calculate a weighted mean. Inspect normalized weight shares, each contribution and a comparison with the unweighted average.
Find a percentage of a value, percentage change, or the percentage represented by a part. See substituted numbers, steps and a number line.
