Calculation steps
Work through one step at a time or reveal the complete calculation. The steps use your current inputs.
How to calculate
For addition and subtraction, put both fractions over a common denominator. For multiplication, multiply numerators and denominators. For division, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction. Divide the final numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor.
a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/(bd); (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = ad/(bc)
Worked example
1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. For 1 1/2 ÷ 3/4, convert the mixed number to 3/2, then multiply by 4/3 to obtain 2.
Assumptions and input details
Use signed integers, fractions such as -2/3, or mixed numbers such as -1 1/2. A minus sign applies to the whole mixed number. Exact results use integer arithmetic; decimal results are approximations.
Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Reduced fractions use exact integer arithmetic. Decimal and percentage displays are approximate.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
