How forex profit and loss is calculated
A currency pair quotes the value of one base currency unit in the quote currency. Position profit is calculated from the full number of base currency units, not from the cash margin used.
Long price P/L = (exit rate − entry rate) × base currency units
Short price P/L = (entry rate − exit rate) × base currency units
Account profit = (price P/L + swap in quote currency) × quote-to-account rate − opening fee − closing fee
Profit after estimated tax = account profit − entered or estimated tax
Worked example: USD/JPY long
A long position of 10,000 USD opened at 150 JPY per USD and closed at 151 makes 10,000 JPY from price movement. Add a 500 JPY swap credit and subtract opening and closing fees of 100 JPY each: profit before tax is 10,300 JPY. If you explicitly enter an illustrative 20% tax rate, estimated tax is 2,060 JPY and profit after tax is 8,240 JPY.
Short positions and quote conversion
A short position benefits from a lower exit rate; the price difference is reversed. If your account uses a different currency from the quote currency, the selected conversion rate converts the resulting P/L and swap, not the full notional position value.
Prices, spreads and swap
Enter the opening execution price and the expected closing execution price from your broker. A dated reference rate is an optional scenario input and is not a live executable quote. The spread is already reflected when appropriate bid / ask execution prices are used. Enter the total swap or financing amount once; this page does not infer a daily financing schedule.
FX profit questions
Why enter units per lot?
Lot conventions and contract specifications can differ. Use units directly, or enter your lot quantity and the base currency units represented by one lot. A size of 0.1 lots with 100,000 units per lot means 10,000 base currency units.
Is the return on margin a return on the full position value?
No. The optional return uses the entered cash margin as its denominator. Without a margin amount, return on margin stays unspecified. Margin never replaces the position size in the P/L calculation.
Are taxes and losses calculated for my country?
No. Enter a tax rate or tax amount, explicitly choose no tax, or leave tax unspecified. A percentage is applied only to positive profit after entered fees. This page does not calculate annual loss offsets, tax exemptions, previous swap taxation or a final tax return.
