How to calculate
Integrate the positive and negative parts of a linear existing-grade profile separately, then scale them by constant width and user-entered volume factors.
Cut=width×∫max(existing grade,0)dx; fill=width×∫max(−existing grade,0)dx
Worked example
A 10×2 m strip sloping from +0.2 m to -0.1 m relative to a level plan has cut volume 4/3 m³ and fill volume 1/3 m³ before any loose-volume factors.
Assumptions and input details
Positive entered elevation means material above the planned level (cut); negative means fill. One straight plane along length and constant cross-width elevation are assumed. Loose cut and required loose fill use separate entered factors; examples are not soil-specific defaults. Volume balance does not establish that excavated material is suitable or reusable. No survey interpolation, drainage design, compaction method, stability, retaining wall or structural assessment is included.
Unit definitions
Unit selection is independent of language. Each selector contains only units for its physical quantity. Calculations use defined base units internally.
Choose from 23 length definitions, including explicitly labelled regional measures. Area conversions square the length factor; geometric volumes cube it.
Regional measures are not interchangeable merely because their names look similar. This is a documented selection, not a claim to include every historical unit.

Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
Calculate area, perimeter and area centroid from 3–50 ordered vertices of a simple polygon. Inspect an equal-scale outline and a table of edges.
Enter two known points and a target x or y. Calculate the other coordinate, view the straight-line model and clearly distinguish interpolation from extrapolation.
Convert square feet, square meters, acres and hectares without confusing linear and squared factors.
