How to calculate
Normalize component mole fractions and apply the ideal distinguishable-component mixing relation.
ΔSmix=−RΣni ln xi; ΔGmix=−TΔSmix
Worked example
Mixing one mole each of two distinguishable ideal species gives ΔS=2R ln 2≈11.5262926 J/K. A single species gives zero mixing entropy.
Assumptions and input details
Same initial/final temperature, ideal gas mixing at common pressure or an ideal solution with zero mixing enthalpy. Species labels must be genuinely distinguishable; no entropy from fictitiously splitting one species into duplicate categories. No nonideal excess terms or reaction entropy.
Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
