How to calculate
Expand up to twenty pieces, reserve one kerf after each and search allocations of effective lengths into identical usable stock lengths.
Effective piece length=finished length+reserved kerf; usable stock=stock−2×end trim
Worked example
With stock 10, no trim/kerf, pieces 4,4,3,3,3,3 can be allocated to two stocks as 4+3+3 each; a simple greedy allocation may use three.
Assumptions and input details
Exact search for at most 20 pieces under this conservative convention, with a 500000-state computation cap. Kerf is reserved after every piece, including the last; actual end-edge cutting can use less. If the search cap is reached, no minimum is claimed. Straight one-dimensional allocation only; no material quality, grain, clamping or machine clearance is inferred.
Unit definitions
