Calculation steps
Work through one step at a time or reveal the complete calculation. The steps use your current inputs.
How to calculate
Treat BPM as the entered beat unit. Sum augmentation dots, then scale the note by normal/actual for a tuplet. Calculate a bar from the explicitly entered count of tempo beats.
Note seconds=60/BPM×(4/note denominator)×(2−2^(−dots))×normal/actual÷beat quarters
Worked example
At 120 quarter-note BPM, a quarter lasts 0.5 seconds, an eighth 0.25 seconds and a triplet eighth 1/6 second. Four tempo beats per bar give 2-second bars.
Assumptions and input details
A dotted-quarter beat at 120 BPM differs from a quarter beat at 120 BPM. Tuplet 3:2 means three of the selected note in the time of two. Tempo beats per bar is entered directly; it is not inferred from a time-signature numerator. Constant tempo, with no swing, rubato, fermata or audio scheduling latency.
Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
Convert musical notes and frequencies in twelve-tone equal temperament with your entered A4 tuning reference.
Convert frame counts, elapsed seconds and timecode, or measure a start/end timecode span. Select exact fractional rates and an explicit drop-frame convention.
Add or subtract up to 100 durations. Use signed clock durations or decimal hours, minutes or seconds, then compare the exact total and running sums.
