Calculation steps

Work through one step at a time or reveal the complete calculation. The steps use your current inputs.

    How to calculate

    Expand each trim size by bleed on both sides, remove sheet margins, and fit a uniform grid with extra gaps. Compare whole-grid orientations and round required sheets upward.

    Columns=floor((usable width+gap)/(item width+2 bleed+gap)); sheets=ceil(required/(rows×columns))+extra

    Worked example

    A 210×297 mm sheet with 5 mm margins fits 2×4 items of 85×55 mm with 3 mm bleed and 2 mm extra gaps: 8 per sheet. Rotating gives a 3×3 grid of 9 per sheet. For 100 items plus 2 spare sheets, choose the rotated layout and use 14 sheets.

    Assumptions and input details

    This compares uniform orientations; mixed rotation or irregular nesting may fit more. Gap is additional space outside both bleed boxes, not the total trim-to-trim gap. No duplex pairing, booklet signatures, gripper edge, color bars or printer-specific printable area is inferred. All extra sheets are counted as potential output, not guaranteed usable items.

    Unit definitions

    Unit selection is independent of language. Each selector contains only units for its physical quantity. Calculations use defined base units internally.

    Choose from 23 length definitions, including explicitly labelled regional measures. Area conversions square the length factor; geometric volumes cube it.

    Regional measures are not interchangeable merely because their names look similar. This is a documented selection, not a claim to include every historical unit.

    Using this calculator

    Can I enter my own problem?

    Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.

    Are the results exact?

    Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.

    Is my input uploaded?

    The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
