Calculation steps
Work through one step at a time or reveal the complete calculation. The steps use your current inputs.
How to calculate
Treat known erasure positions as costing one parity symbol and unknown error locations as costing two.
Unique decoding bound: 2×unknown errors+known erasures≤parity; n≤2^m−1
Worked example
32 parity symbols with four erasures leave capacity for 14 unknown symbol errors.
Assumptions and input details
Conventional nonextended RS block length, not a bit-error probability, actual encoder or guaranteed behavior beyond the bound. Known erasures must not exceed parity; no burst/interleaver or implementation assumptions.
Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
Encode four data bits or inspect a seven/eight-bit Hamming codeword under explicit error-count assumptions.
Encode a raw binary message or check a received codeword by explicit generator-polynomial division.
Compare bits and bytes using clearly separated decimal and binary prefixes.
