Calculation steps
Work through one step at a time or reveal the complete calculation. The steps use your current inputs.
How to calculate
Discard exact cutoff ties, encode above/below signs and count consecutive sign blocks. Correct the absolute run-count deviation toward its mean by half a run.
E[R]=1+2n+ n−/n; Var[R]=2n+n−(2n+n−−n)/(n²(n−1))
Worked example
Five positive and five negative values alternating have ten runs; the null expected runs are six.
Assumptions and input details
At least ten non-tied observations and at least two of each sign; approximation is best when both sign counts are large. This is a binary runs test, not proof of randomness or a serial-dependence diagnostic for every alternative.
Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
