How to calculate
Divide room area by tile face area for an area-only budget, or multiply the rounded-up row and column counts for a simple grid without reusing offcuts. Apply the additional allowance, round up to whole tiles, then round to whole packs.
area model = ceil[(room area / tile area)×(1+allowance/100)]; grid model = ceil[ceil(L/l)×ceil(W/w)×(1+allowance/100)]
Worked example
A 5 m × 4 m room with 300 mm square tiles has area 20 m². The area model with 10% allowance needs 245 tiles; packs of 8 require 31 packs (248 tiles). The no-reuse grid uses 17×14=238 tiles before allowance, or 262 after 10%.
Assumptions and input details
The room is rectangular, without subtracted openings. The area estimate is a budget model, not a guaranteed cut plan. Grid models assume no grout gap and no reuse of cutoffs; rotating a non-square tile may change the row and column counts. Pattern matching, tile breakage, room irregularity, grout and saw kerf are not modelled. The allowance is user-entered, not an automatic recommendation. Each displayed grid/estimate supports up to one billion tiles; floating-point noise within a few ULPs of a whole count is rounded consistently.
Unit definitions
Unit selection is independent of language. Each selector contains only units for its physical quantity. Calculations use defined base units internally.
Choose from 23 length definitions, including explicitly labelled regional measures. Area conversions square the length factor; geometric volumes cube it.
Regional measures are not interchangeable merely because their names look similar. This is a documented selection, not a claim to include every historical unit.

Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
