Calculation steps

How to calculate
Project to normalized Web Mercator, select the containing XYZ tile and retain the fractional256-pixel tile position.
x=2^zoom(lon+180)/360; y=2^zoom(1−asinh(tan(lat))/π)/2
Worked example
Latitude0,longitude0 at zoom2 lie at tile x2,y2 with local pixel0,0.
Assumptions and input details
Spherical Web Mercator and256-pixel XYZ tiles with y southward, not TMS. Latitude is restricted to the finite map cutoff. Positive180° is assigned to the final tile’s right boundary rather than wrapped. No map requests, geocoding or location permission.

Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
Convert unsigned latitude/longitude magnitudes and hemispheres into signed decimal degrees, decimal minutes and DMS.
Convert a measured map length through a representative-fraction scale into ground distance, coverage and a labeled scale table.
Calculate the shortest surface distance and initial bearing between two latitude/longitude points on an entered spherical Earth model.
