How to calculate
Use the nominal geometric AWG progression and explicitly compare diameter or cross-sectional area.
d(mm)=0.127×92^[(36−n)/39]; area=πd²/4; 0/00/000/0000 (or 1/0–4/0) map to n=0,−1,−2,−3
Worked example
AWG 12 has nominal diameter about 2.0525 mm and area about 3.3095 mm². AWG 36 anchors at 0.127 mm; 0000 anchors at 11.684 mm.
Assumptions and input details
Supported nominal sizes are36through0000,for solid round bare conductors. Formula values are geometric reference numbers, not a manufacturing-tolerance specification. Nearest gauge uses the entered physical quantity; the at-least-area row is only geometry. Stranded outside diameter, insulation, conductor material, resistance, ampacity and protective-device suitability are not inferred.

Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
