Calculation steps
Work through one step at a time or reveal the complete calculation. The steps use your current inputs.
How to calculate
Convert the entered notation to decimal inches, snap to a chosen binary ruler tick and reduce the fractional part.
Tick count=round-rule(decimal inches×ticks per inch); error=(snapped−original)×25.4 mm
Worked example
5 7/16 inches is 5.4375 inches and 138.1125 mm. At a 1/16-inch ruler it needs no rounding.
Assumptions and input details
Measurements are nonnegative. Mixed fractions use a space, and feet use a vertical bar before residual inches below 12. A selected ruler reading is an approximation; original decimal inches and mm remain visible separately. This is not a tolerance or a guarantee of cutting accuracy.

Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
