Calculation steps

How to calculate
Convert the entered arithmetic mean and standard deviation to lognormal gross-return parameters. Generate independent annual scenarios with a seeded pseudorandom generator; add contributions and cap withdrawals at available wealth.
Log variance=ln(1+sd²/(1+mean)²); log mean=ln(1+mean)−log variance/2
Worked example
At zero return and zero volatility, initial wealth 1000, no contributions and annual withdrawal 100 for three years leave exactly 700 on every simulated path.
Assumptions and input details
Independent identically distributed annual lognormal gross returns are a chosen model, not an estimate fitted to market data. 1–100 years. Results are simulation frequencies and percentiles under entered assumptions, not real-world probabilities or guarantees. Withdrawals occur after returns and contributions. No inflation, tax, fees, serial dependence or market regime changes. Reusing the seed reproduces the same simulated paths. No live market data or national tax rules are inferred. Enter consistent amounts in one currency unless explicitly stated otherwise.
Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
Compare the original and reversed order of the same annual returns with fixed annual withdrawals.
Model monthly withdrawals, constant effective returns and annual withdrawal increases over a chosen horizon.
Add balances in different currencies, including debts. Convert the total and compare a table and currency chart.
