How to calculate
Normalize the energy-transfer rate to watts using the chosen horsepower or heat-rate definition.
Mechanical hp=550 ft·lbf/s; metric hp=75 kgf·m/s; refrigeration ton=12000 Btu(IT)/h
Worked example
100 mechanical horsepower is approximately 74.5699872 kW. Metric horsepower is a different unit at 735.49875 W per PS.
Assumptions and input details
Mechanical horsepower and metric horsepower/PS are separate options. Refrigeration ton means a cooling-capacity rate, not a mass or electrical input. Converting cooling capacity to watts does not determine electric consumption without performance data. Boiler horsepower and manufacturer rating methods are excluded.

Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
