How to calculate
Each folded sheet contributes four page positions and two leaves. Round content into complete signatures and estimate closed-block paper thickness.
Pages/signature=4×sheets; signatures=ceil(content/pages per signature); paper block=2×total sheets×caliper
Worked example
100 content pages with four sheets per signature require seven 16-page signatures: 28 sheets, 112 page positions and 12 blanks. At 0.1 mm sheet caliper, paper block thickness is 5.6 mm.
Assumptions and input details
Page positions count both sides of leaves. Every signature uses the same sheet count; end blanks are added to fill the final signature. Spine extra is entered separately and does not calculate sewing swell, fold creep, glue layers or cover hinging. No print-order imposition is generated. Up to 1e6 content pages and 100 sheets per signature; at most 200 signature rows are displayed, with omissions counted.
Unit definitions
Unit selection is independent of language. Each selector contains only units for its physical quantity. Calculations use defined base units internally.
Choose from 23 length definitions, including explicitly labelled regional measures. Area conversions square the length factor; geometric volumes cube it.
Regional measures are not interchangeable merely because their names look similar. This is a documented selection, not a claim to include every historical unit.

Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
