How to calculate
Divide the mass of a 500-sheet basis ream by its combined uncut-sheet area.
gsm=basis pounds×453.59237/(500×width in×height in×0.0254²)
Worked example
20 lb bond at 17×22 inches per basic sheet is about 75.1946074 gsm. Its numerical pound basis differs from text and cover weights at that same gsm.
Assumptions and input details
The four named grades use the explicitly shown basic sheet dimensions and 500 sheets. A basis ream is not automatically 500 finished letter-size pages. Conversion preserves mass per area and does not establish thickness, stiffness, opacity, printer compatibility or a postal requirement. Manufacturer nominal weight may be rounded.

Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
