Calculation steps

How to calculate
Calculate service charge and entered tax, choose the tip base, optionally credit service toward the tip target and sum the final bill.
Additional tip=max(0,tip base×tip rate−credited service charge)
Worked example
A pretax 100 bill, 10% service, 10% tax excluding service and an 18% pretax tip target need 8 additional tip. Total is 128, averaging 64 per person.
Assumptions and input details
These are entered arithmetic conventions, not local tipping or tax rules. Existing service can either count toward your target or remain separate. Service is excluded from the tip base. The per-person figure is an unrounded average, not a cent-balanced payment settlement. No payment is sent.
Using this calculator
Can I enter my own problem?
Yes. Replace the example values with your own inputs. The result, calculation steps, tables and applicable diagrams update from those inputs. Blank or invalid values clear the result; example values are never silently substituted for missing inputs.
Are the results exact?
Results use floating-point arithmetic and displayed rounding. Read the formula, assumptions and any stated data precision before interpreting the result.
Is my input uploaded?
The calculation runs in your browser. No account, file upload or external AI service is required. Inputs are not saved between page reloads.
Split a shared expense by equal or weighted shares and calculate who pays whom. Keep rounded shares and transfers balanced exactly to your selected currency precision.
Add or extract an entered percentage tax across item amounts and inspect net, tax and gross totals with per-line rounding.
Combine consecutive percentage discounts, a fixed coupon, entered goods tax and shipping in a defined order.
